Welcome to the Warsaw University of Technology Yeast Collection

Using our website, we encourage microbiologists and biotechnologists to utilize the potential of the WUT Yeast Collection (WUT YC) and a possibility to obtain a yeast strain possessing the desired features.

WUT YC was established in 2017 at the Chair of Drug and Cosmetics Biotechnology, Faculty of Chemistry and has been created (2017-2020) under the SONATA11 project "Searching for new yeast strains capable of producing natural flavor volatiles, pigments and polymers" (2016/21/D/NZ9/01605) funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.

Our culture collection contains not only a traditional baking and brewing Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast but also dozens of so-called unconventional yeast species such as strains from Aureobasidium, Barnettozyma, Candida, Hanseniaspora, Metschnikovia, Meyerozyma, Pichia, Rhodotorulla genera and many others. The yeasts are kept frozen (-80ÂșC) as glycerol stocks.

Our collection is publicly available and provides detailed information about newly isolated yeast strains from environmental samples and spontaneously fermented food, containing systematic names and phenotypic traits. Moreover, strains are accompanied by information about the ability to grow and produce selected metabolites (mainly: pigments, flavor compounds, exopolysaccharides and ethanol) on tested standard media and industrial organic waste.
